Getting there

Private Car

If you are traveling by private car, start from the town of Kapenguria, which is a primary access point in the Pokot Region. Head northwest on the A1 highway towards Kitale. After approximately 50 kilometers, turn off onto the road marked towards Sigor. Continue on this road for about 25 kilometers until you reach Sigor town. From Sigor, take the road towards Panyor, which is well-marked. Mount Mtelo is about 15 kilometers from Panyor, and the road may be rough, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Follow the dirt road, and you will see signs pointing towards Mount Mtelo as you approach the base of the mountain.

Public Transportation

To reach Mount Mtelo using public transportation, start your journey at the Kapenguria bus station. Look for matatus (shared taxis) heading towards Sigor. The fare is usually around 200 KES. Once you arrive in Sigor, you can either hire a local taxi or ask for directions to the nearest vehicle service heading towards Panyor. The fare for this short trip should be around 100 KES. Once you reach Panyor, you may need to negotiate with local drivers for a ride to the base of Mount Mtelo, as public transport may not run frequently to this destination. Expect to pay around 300-500 KES for the ride, depending on the vehicle type and negotiation skills.

Hiking

If you are adventurous and physically fit, you can consider hiking to Mount Mtelo from Panyor. Prepare for a challenging hike of about 15 kilometers with varying terrain, including rocky paths and steep inclines. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry sufficient water and snacks. It's advisable to hire a local guide for safety and navigation, which could cost around 1000 KES. Starting your hike early in the morning will help you avoid the midday heat.
