Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Submarine Drum.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the main entrance of Tsavo East National Park, which is typically the Voi Gate. From the Voi Gate, take the main park road heading southeast. Continue driving for approximately 40 kilometers, keeping an eye out for wildlife. After about 40 kilometers, you will reach a junction; take a right turn at the junction. Follow the signs directing you towards the 'Submarine Drum' area. The coordinates for Submarine Drum are 227C+RQQ, so you can also use a GPS device for precise navigation. Be prepared for some rough roads, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. The total journey should take about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic and wildlife sightings.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, you can start your journey from Voi town. There are matatus (shared taxis) that operate from Voi to various destinations within Tsavo National Park. Board a matatu heading towards Tsavo East National Park and inform the driver that you want to get off near Submarine Drum. The fare is typically around KES 300-500 depending on the distance and demand. Once you reach the park, you may need to arrange for a local guide or driver to take you directly to Submarine Drum, as public transport does not reach all tourist attractions directly within the park. Expect to pay an additional fee for the guide's services.
Walking
For adventurous travelers already within the vicinity of Submarine Drum, it is possible to walk to the site. However, this is recommended only for experienced hikers, as the terrain can be rough and wildlife is abundant. Make sure to carry plenty of water and snacks. From the nearest lodge or campsite, determine your direction using a compass or GPS, heading towards the coordinates 227C+RQQ. Always inform someone about your plans before embarking on a walk, and consider hiring a local guide for safety.
