Discover more about Patuxay - Victory Monument

Patuxay, meaning "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph," is a war monument in the heart of Vientiane, Laos. Constructed between 1957 and 1968, it stands as a tribute to the Lao people who fought for independence from French colonial rule. The monument is also known as Anou Savary, and the French referred to it as Monument Aux Morts. While its architecture bears a resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Patuxay incorporates distinct Laotian design elements. The five towers adorning the top represent the five principles of coexistence and the five Buddhist principles. The monument has gateways on all four sides, and visitors can ascend a spiral stairway to reach the observation deck. The arches' ceilings feature Laotian ornamentations, including depictions of Hindu gods and mythological creatures. Inside, the seven floors house administrative offices, shops, a museum, and viewing galleries. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Vientiane, with its low-rise buildings, temples, and the Mekong River. The surrounding Patuxay Park features gardens, lotus ponds, and a musical fountain donated by China.
