Wat Mixai: The Victory Temple

Discover Wat Mixai, Vientiane's 'Victory Temple': A blend of Lao history, Thai architecture, and vibrant Buddhist culture in the city center.

4.2

Wat Mixai, or the Temple of Victory, stands as a testament to Lao resilience and architectural fusion in the heart of Vientiane. Originally built in the late 16th century (1550-1571) during the reign of King Sai Setthathirat, it commemorated the victory over Burmese troops. The temple's name is also associated with Buddha's victory over the demon Mara. In the early 1900s, Wat Mixai underwent a significant renovation, adopting a Central Thai style of religious architecture. This is evident in its less pronounced roof curve and the use of red tiles, distinguishing it from typical Lao temples. The gate is guarded by statues of 'asuras' from the Ramayana, reflecting the integration of Hindu elements into Buddhist beliefs. The gate is topped with 'hti', which are tiered gold umbrella shaped ornaments common to religious buildings in Myanmar. Today, Wat Mixai is a vibrant center for the local Buddhist community, serving as a place of worship, monastic study, and education with a school located within its grounds. Visitors can admire the large Buddha statue in the main hall, the red and gold decorated columns, and the ceiling murals depicting the Buddha's life. The temple grounds also feature small stupas and sculptures of mythical creatures. Wat Mixai offers a serene escape from the city's bustle and an opportunity to witness the daily life of monks, novices, and worshippers.
