Discover more about Wat Ong Teu

Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan stands as a prominent testament to Laotian religious heritage in the heart of Vientiane. Originally constructed in the 16th century during the reign of King Setthathirath I, it marked a golden age for Buddhism in Laos. The temple's name derives from the colossal bronze Phra Ong Teu Buddha statue it houses, the largest of its kind in Vientiane, which serves as the focal point of the temple.Throughout its history, Wat Ong Teu has faced numerous challenges, including destruction during foreign invasions, notably by the Siamese army in 1827. However, it was rebuilt during the French colonial period in the 20th century, emphasizing its importance as a religious and educational center. The French may have also created a school in the same format as the rest of the complex to further exemplify the function of Wat Ong Teu as a place of study. The Lao Buddhist Institute was established in 1929 and continues to function today as a school for Theravada Buddhist religion. The temple's architecture showcases a blend of Lao and Thai styles, featuring multi-tiered roofs symbolizing Mount Meru, and decorative elements like naga sculptures and lotus motifs. The main hall, or 'sim,' serves as the primary place of worship and meditation. Flanking the main hall are smaller structures, including prayer halls, meditation pavilions, and monks’ living quarters. Wat Ong Teu embodies the Luang Prabang I style, characterized by limited brickwork and a rectangular structure.Today, Wat Ong Teu remains a central hub for Theravada Buddhist learning, attracting monks and visitors from across Southeast Asia. It plays a crucial role in preserving Laotian Buddhist traditions, hosting religious ceremonies and community gatherings. The temple is open to the public during daylight hours with no admission fee, offering a serene environment for exploration and contemplation.
