Discover Wat Xiengthong, Luang Prabang's crown jewel: a temple of gilded artistry, rich history, and spiritual serenity at the Mekong's edge.
Wat Xiengthong, or the Temple of the Golden City, is one of Luang Prabang's most important and beautiful temples. Built in 1560 by King Setthathirath, it's a stunning example of traditional Lao architecture, known for its intricate mosaics, gilded carvings, and the unique 'tree of life' mosaic on its western exterior wall.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
Wat Xiengthong is centrally located in Luang Prabang, making it easily accessible on foot from most guesthouses and hotels in the city center. From the main street, Sisavangvong Road, head towards the Mekong River. The temple is located at the end of the peninsula, where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet. The walk is generally flat and takes about 10-20 minutes from the center of town. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to remove them before entering the temple buildings.
Tuk-tuk
Tuk-tuks are readily available throughout Luang Prabang and offer a convenient way to reach Wat Xiengthong. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey. A short tuk-tuk ride from anywhere in the city center should cost around 20,000-30,000 LAK. Be sure to tell the driver 'Wat Xiengthong' to avoid any confusion. The ride is quick, usually no more than 5-10 minutes from most central locations.
