Getting there

Car

If you're traveling by car, start from Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Take Route 13 north towards Luang Prabang. After approximately 250 km, turn right onto Route 7 towards Pakxan. Continue on Route 7 for about 85 km until you reach the town of Paksan. From Paksan, head east on Route 12 for around 40 km. Look for signs directing you to Kao Rao Cave. The cave is located approximately 2 km from the main road, requiring a short drive on a dirt road. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for unpaved roads.

Public Transportation

To reach Kao Rao Cave via public transportation, board a bus from Vientiane to Paksan at the main bus station. The journey takes about 4-5 hours and costs approximately 60,000 LAK. Once in Paksan, you can hire a local tuk-tuk or share a ride with other travelers to the cave. The tuk-tuk ride will cost around 30,000 LAK per person. Make sure to agree on the fare before starting your journey. The cave is about 2 km from the main road, and the driver should be familiar with the location.

Motorbike Rental

For a more adventurous option, consider renting a motorbike in Vientiane. After renting, follow the same route as in the car description, taking Route 13 north and then Route 7 east. The total distance is about 350 km from Vientiane, and the ride can take about 6-7 hours. The rental cost varies from 80,000 to 150,000 LAK per day, depending on the type of bike. Make sure to wear a helmet and carry a valid driving license. Once you reach the area near the cave, park your bike and walk the last 2 km to the cave entrance.
