Wat May is centrally located on Sisavangvong Road, next to the Royal Palace Museum, in Luang Prabang's old town. From most points in the old town, it's easily reachable on foot. Walking from the night market, simply head north; the temple is adjacent to the Royal Palace Museum. No costs are involved.

Overview

Wat May Souvannapoumaram, often called Wat May (meaning 'New Monastery'), is a stunning Buddhist temple in the heart of Luang Prabang. Established around 1780 by King Anurat, it is one of the largest and most richly adorned temples in the city, showcasing the unique Luang Prabang architectural style.Wat May's 'sim' (ordination hall) is particularly impressive, boasting a five-tiered roof adorned with golden 'Naga' finials. The temple's exterior walls feature intricate gilded reliefs depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Jataka tales, and everyday life in Luang Prabang. These detailed carvings offer a glimpse into Lao culture and traditions. The temple was spared from destruction in 1887 when Chinese invaders attacked Luang Prabang. For a period, it housed the Phra Bang Buddha image, the most venerated Buddha image in Laos, before it was moved to the Royal Palace Museum.Located on Sisavangvong Road, next to the Royal Palace, Wat May is easily accessible and remains an active temple, with monks residing on the grounds. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, admire the architecture, and experience the serene atmosphere. During Lao New Year (Pi Mai), the Phra Bang is brought to Wat May for ceremonial cleansing, attracting devout Laotians from across the country.
