Discover more about Wat Pa Phon Phao

Wat Pa Phon Phao, or the 'Peacefulness Temple,' offers a serene escape with panoramic views of Luang Prabang. Built in the 1950s by Mrs. Bounmy Phonsak, a wealthy Laotian woman, the temple was intended as a meditation retreat for monks and laypeople. The temple's most striking feature is its octagonal shape, said to represent the eightfold path to enlightenment. A gleaming golden stupa sits atop the hill, visible from many points in Luang Prabang. Inside, vibrant murals depict scenes from the Buddha's life, Buddhist cosmology, and moral exhortations. One particularly striking mural illustrates the concept of Buddhist hell, serving as a reminder of the importance of leading a moral life. Another mural showcases various Buddhist architectural styles from across Southeast Asia.Wat Pa Phon Phao was once headed by Ajahn Saisamut, a revered Lao Buddhist teacher. His funeral in 1992 was one of the largest Laos had ever seen. Today, the temple continues to be a place of meditation and spiritual learning, managed by female monks. Visitors should dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees.
