Wat Phathat Si Khottabong, also known as Sikhottabong Stupa, stands as one of Laos' most significant Buddhist temples. Located approximately 6 kilometers south of Thakhek, in Ban Meuangkao, the temple is set on the banks of the Mekong River. This sacred site attracts both devoted pilgrims and curious travelers to its serene and culturally rich grounds.The temple's history dates back to the Sikhottabong Kingdom, with the stupa believed to have been initially constructed in the 6th century to enshrine relics of the Buddha. The temple was restored and renovated multiple times, most notably during the reign of King Setthathirath I in 1568, who added Lao Lan Xang architectural elements. The 29-meter-high central golden stupa rises majestically, showcasing classic Lan Xang architecture.
