Discover more about Patuxay - Victory Monument

Patuxay, meaning "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph", is a prominent landmark in the heart of Vientiane, Laos. Built between 1957 and 1968, the monument commemorates those who fought for independence from France. Interestingly, the monument was constructed using funds and cement from the United States intended for the construction of a new airport, leading to its nickname, the "vertical runway".While Patuxay's architecture is reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it distinctly incorporates traditional Laotian design elements. The five towers symbolize the five principles of coexistence among nations and the five Buddhist principles. The arches are adorned with carvings of Hindu gods, Brahma and Vishnu, as well as mythological creatures like the kinnaree and the three-headed elephant Erawan.Visitors can climb the monument to enjoy panoramic views of Vientiane. The interior is richly decorated with painted walls and ceilings depicting gods, goddesses, and elephants. Surrounding Patuxay is Patuxay Park, featuring gardens with palm trees, lotus ponds, and a musical fountain donated by China. Patuxay stands as an iconic symbol of Vientiane, representing Laos's history, resilience, and cultural heritage.
