Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the capital of Houaphanh Province, Sam Neua. Take Route 6 heading east for approximately 90 kilometers until you reach the town of Viang Xai. Once in Viang Xai, follow the signs towards Viengxay Caves. The caves are located about 12 kilometers from the town center. You can park your car near the entrance of the caves, where there are facilities available for visitors.
Public Transportation
To reach Viengxay Caves via public transportation, first take a bus from Sam Neua to Viang Xai. Buses leave regularly from the main bus station and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Upon arriving in Viang Xai, you will need to hire a tuk-tuk or bicycle to reach the caves, which are approximately 12 kilometers away from the town. Tuk-tuk rides may cost around 20,000 to 30,000 LAK (Lao Kip). Make sure to negotiate the price before starting your journey.
Bicycle
For the more adventurous traveler, renting a bicycle in Viang Xai can be a great way to reach the caves. After arriving in Viang Xai, look for local rental shops where you can rent a bicycle for around 10,000 to 20,000 LAK per day. The ride to the caves is about 12 kilometers and can take around 45 minutes to an hour depending on your cycling speed. The route is relatively flat and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
