Discover more about Patuxay - Victory Monument

Patuxay, meaning "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph," is a prominent landmark in the heart of Vientiane, Laos. Built between 1957 and 1968, the monument commemorates the Laotian soldiers who died during World War II and the fight for independence from France in 1949. While often called the Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane due to its resemblance to the Parisian landmark, Patuxay possesses a distinct Laotian character. The exterior is adorned with traditional Laotian motifs, including Buddhist symbols, Hindu deities, and Kinnaree statues (half-female, half-bird figures). The ceilings of the four arches showcase depictions of Hindu gods like Brahma and Vishnu, as well as the three-headed elephant Erawan. The monument has five towers, symbolizing the five principles of coexistence among nations and the five Buddhist principles. Visitors can climb the seven stories to the top via stairs or a new lift, exploring souvenir shops and a small museum along the way. The observation deck offers panoramic views of Vientiane and the Mekong River. Surrounding Patuxay is Patuxai Park, featuring palm trees, lotus ponds, and a musical fountain donated by China. The park also contains a World Peace Gong presented by Indonesia.
