Discover more about Wat May Souvannapoumaram

Wat Mai, meaning "New Monastery," holds a significant place in the hearts of Luang Prabang's residents. Constructed in the late 1700s by King Anurat, it later became the royal family's temple. The temple also housed the Phra Bang, Luang Prabang's most sacred Buddha image, for a time after Chinese Haw raiders damaged much of the city in the late 19th century. The sim, or ordination hall, is Wat Mai's most striking feature, exemplified by its five-tiered roof adorned with golden Naga finials. The front veranda boasts detailed golden reliefs depicting scenes from village life, the Ramayana, and the Jataka tales. These were created during a remodeling project in the 1960s. The interior is equally impressive, with red and gold stenciling on the columns, beams, and walls, as well as a large gilded Buddha statue. Wat Mai remains an active temple, offering visitors a glimpse into Lao Buddhist practices. During Pi Mai, the Lao New Year, the Phra Bang is brought to Wat Mai for ceremonial cleansing, drawing devout Laotians from across the country. The temple's central location near the Royal Palace and night market makes it easily accessible and a must-see for those exploring Luang Prabang's cultural heritage.
