UXO Lao Visitor Center: A Stark Reminder

Learn about the Secret War in Laos and the ongoing efforts to clear unexploded ordnance.

4.7

The UXO Lao Visitor Center offers a stark and important lesson on theSecret War in Laos. From 1964 to 1973, the United States dropped over two million tons of ordnance on Laos in an attempt to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines. This makes Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. A staggering amount of these explosives failed to detonate, leaving behind a deadly legacy of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that continues to threaten lives and hinder development. The visitor center provides a comprehensive overview of this history, detailing the types of ordnance used, the impact on the Lao people, and the work of UXO Lao, the national organization responsible for clearing these explosives. Exhibits include displays of actual UXO items, compelling survivor stories, and a documentary film. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by communities living with UXO contamination and the importance of ongoing clearance efforts. UXO Lao was established in 1996 to address the devastating consequences of unexploded ordnance. The organization works to clear UXO, educate communities about the risks, and assist victims of UXO accidents. Their work is essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Lao people and enabling sustainable development. The center is located near the Monument to President Souphanouvong.
