Wat Chomphet: A Tranquil Temple with Panoramic Views

Discover panoramic views and historical charm at Wat Chomphet, a hilltop temple offering a tranquil escape from Luang Prabang's vibrant heart.

Wat Chomphet, also known as Wat Chom Phet Satni Silimoungknoun Vaxi Alram, sits on a hilltop in the village of Ban Xieng Maen, across the Mekong River from Luang Prabang. Founded in 1888 by Siamese military commander Chaophraya Surasakmontri, the temple's construction served to pacify the area after the Chinese Haw sacked the town. To reach the temple, visitors must climb 123 steps, a journey rewarded with breathtaking views of Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. While the temple has fallen into disrepair, with some restoration work having commenced in late 2023, its weathered façade adds to its authentic charm. Inside, remnants of its history can be seen in the ceiling stenciled with dragons and swans, symbols of Chaophraya Surasakmontri. Wat Chomphet once served as an important royal temple, hosting coronation ceremonies. The temple grounds also contain two stupas holding the remains of King Ounkham (r. 1868 - 1895) and his mother, Princess Khammoun. Wat Chomphet offers a serene escape from the bustling city, allowing visitors to soak in the panoramic views and appreciate the blend of history and spirituality. The temple is often visited in conjunction with other temples in the area, such as Wat Xieng Maen and Wat Long Khun.
