Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest city, such as Savannakhet or Thakhek. Follow Route 13 northbound towards the town of Ban Phon. As you approach Ban Phon, turn onto Route 12 heading east. Continue on Route 12 until you see signs for Xe Bangfai River. The river is located approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Ban Phon. Make sure to keep an eye on the GPS for the exact coordinates: 17.4288° N, 105.6743° E.
Public Transportation
To reach Xe Bangfai River using public transportation, you can take a bus from either Savannakhet or Thakhek. Buses leave regularly from the main bus station (Savannakhet Bus Station or Thakhek Bus Station) to Ban Phon. The bus fare is approximately 30,000 to 50,000 LAK (about $3 to $5). Once you arrive at Ban Phon, you can hire a tuk-tuk or a motorbike taxi to take you to Xe Bangfai River, which should cost around 20,000 to 30,000 LAK (about $2 to $3).
Bicycle
For the more adventurous traveler, consider renting a bicycle in Ban Phon. From the town center, cycle southeast towards Xe Bangfai River, following the same route as cars. The ride is about 30 kilometers and will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your fitness level. Ensure you have enough water and snacks for the journey.
