Discover more about Pak Ou Caves

The Pak Ou Caves, also known as the Buddha Caves, are a sanctuary of Lao spirituality and history, located 25 kilometers north of Luang Prabang. Situated where the Mekong River meets the Nam Ou River, the caves have been a place of worship for centuries. Local beliefs suggest that the caves were initially used as a shrine to river spirits in the 8th century, before Buddhism became prominent in Laos.By the 16th century, the royal family adopted Buddhism, and the caves became a site for annual pilgrimages. Kings and worshippers would travel from Luang Prabang to leave Buddha statues in the caves. Today, the caves house over 4,000 Buddha statues, each with its own story of faith and devotion. The statues, crafted from wood, resin, earthenware, and even animal bones, depict Buddha in various poses, such as meditation, peace, and nirvana. Many are painted in red or black and adorned with gold. The Pak Ou complex consists of two main caves: Tham Ting (the lower cave) and Tham Theung (the upper cave). Tham Ting, easily accessible from the river, is filled with over 2,500 images. Tham Theung, a bit larger and darker, requires climbing a series of stone steps. Inside, thousands more statues are found, some hidden in the shadows. A wooden water channel to the left of the entrance is used by locals to wash household Buddha statues during Lao New Year in April. Exploring the caves offers a glimpse into the spiritual heritage of Laos and the enduring faith of its people.
