    Discover more about Vat Phou

Nestled at the base of Mount Phu Kao (also known as Lingaparvata or Linga Mountain), near Champasak, Vat Phou offers a captivating glimpse into the Khmer Empire's architectural prowess and religious evolution. Predating Angkor Wat by over a century, this 'mountain temple' was initially a Hindu sanctuary, with its origins linked to a sacred spring and dedicated to Shiva, a principal deity in Hinduism. The mountain's peak resembles a linga, a representation of Shiva, further solidifying its sacred status.Over time, Vat Phou transitioned into a Buddhist monastery, integrating Buddhist imagery while retaining its Hindu roots. This unique blend is evident in the temple's carvings, which feature both Hindu gods and Buddhist symbols. The temple complex is aligned on a west-east axis, reflecting Khmer cosmological beliefs, with the mountain representing Mount Meru, the home of the gods.Visitors can explore the temple's intricate stone carvings, which showcase the sophisticated craftsmanship of the Khmer civilization. The complex includes galleries, courtyards, and a main sanctuary adorned with Buddha images. The site also features natural rock formations, including boulders sculpted to resemble an elephant and a crocodile, adding to the mystical atmosphere. Each year, thousands of people visit Vat Phou to pay respect and attend the annual Boun Vat Phou festival. This three-day celebration, held on the full moon of the third lunar month, brings together people from Laos and neighboring countries to celebrate Buddha's teachings.
