    Car/Motorcycle

    From Phonsavan, the capital of Xieng Khouang province, Tham Piew Cave is approximately 60 km away. The journey by car or motorcycle typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on road conditions and traffic. Head east on Route 7 towards Muang Kham. Once in Muang Kham, follow Route 6 north for 2 km to Ban Bouam, then turn left (west) and follow the road to its end. Look for signs indicating the direction to Tham Piew Cave. There is a parking area at the base of the mountain. Costs: Renting a motorcycle in Luang Prabang costs around 150,000 LAK per day. Gas costs will vary, but expect to pay around 20,000-30,000 LAK for a round trip.

    Tham Piew Cave, also known as Piew Cave or Missile Cave, is a site of profound historical significance and natural beauty located in the Muang Kham district of Xieng Khouang province, northeastern Laos. The cave is situated on a rugged mountainside, approximately 80 meters high, with a spacious interior extending hundreds of meters.During the Second Indochina War, specifically on November 24, 1968, the cave became the site of a tragic massacre. Hundreds of local villagers, seeking refuge from U.S. bombing campaigns designed to contain the Marxist Pathet Lao, were sheltering in the vast cave when a single U.S. rocket struck its entrance. The impact resulted in the deaths of 374 men, women, and children, leaving a deep scar on the community and the nation.Today, Tham Piew Cave serves as both a memorial to those who perished and a place for reflection. Visitors can explore the cave, where remnants of debris and scattered rocks serve as evidence of the tragic event. A memorial temple at the foot of the trail features a statue of a sorrowful man cradling a child, and grave markers line the walkway to the cave entrance.
