Constructed in 1214 by Albert, the Archbishop of Riga, the castle replaced a former wooden Livonian fortress. The castle served as a strategic stronghold and residence for the Archbishop, witnessing centuries of warfare and evolving through various architectural adaptations.Over the centuries, Turaida Castle faced numerous conflicts and a devastating fire in 1776 led to its abandonment. However, extensive restoration efforts in the 20th century have revived the castle, allowing visitors to explore its well-preserved towers, walls, and inner courtyard. Alternatively, buses from Riga to Turaida are available, departing from Riga Central Station (Rīgas SAO) and arriving in Turaida in approximately 1 hour and 17 minutes. Tickets for this route range from $3 to $6. From the bus stop in Turaida, it is a short walk to the castle entrance.
