Koknese Castle Ruins: Echoes of Livonian History

Koknese Castle, or what remains of it, stands as a testament to the turbulent history of Latvia. Founded in 1209 by Bishop Albert of Riga, the stone castle replaced an earlier wooden fort. Strategically positioned overlooking the Daugava River, it quickly grew into a significant fortress and a vital member of the Hanseatic League, controlling trade along the Daugava.Over the centuries, the castle was a coveted prize, changing hands between Polish, Swedish, and Russian forces, enduring sieges and battles. In 1701, during the Great Northern War, the castle met its demise when Saxon troops blew up its western towers to prevent it from falling into Russian hands. The castle was abandoned and never rebuilt.Today, the ruins offer a picturesque and historically rich experience.
