Discover more about Kuldiga, Rumba Parish I, Jewish Victim Memorial Site, Latvia

The Kuldiga Jewish Victim Memorial Site stands in solemn tribute to the Jews of Kuldiga who were murdered by the Nazis and local collaborators in July 1941. Following the Nazi occupation of Kuldiga on July 1, 1941, a series of restrictive orders were imposed on the Jewish population, followed by mass arrests. The mass killings began in mid-July, carried out by an SD unit with the assistance of local self-defenders, and continued into August. Four known sites in Rumba Parish were used for the execution of Jews. The exact number of victims and the full circumstances of their murders remain unknown. During the Soviet era, a wooden memorial plaque was erected at one of the murder sites in the Rumba Parish forest, approximately 7 km from Kuldiga. However, the inscription on this plaque is no longer legible. In 2006, the Council of Jewish Communities of Latvia erected a black granite monument next to the original plaque. The inscription in Latvian reads: “Here in July 1941 fascists murdered and buried the Jews of Kuldīga”. The memorial invites visitors to contemplate the importance of remembrance and education in preventing future acts of inhumanity. It serves as a place for personal reflection and a deeper understanding of the past, honoring those who perished and preserving their memory.
