Discover more about Volkenbergas pils

Volkenbergas Pils, more accurately known as Volkenburgas pils, translates to 'Cloud Castle,' a fitting name for this historic site perched atop Mākoņkalns (Cloud Hill). Located in the present-day Rēzekne Municipality, the castle ruins stand approximately 2 km from the southern shore of Razna Lake. The hill rises dramatically, offering commanding views from its height of 247.4 meters, about 60 meters above the surrounding landscape. Originally built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, Volkenbergas Pils was one of the earliest fortifications in Latgale. The castle played a crucial role in the region's defense during medieval times. Today, only fragments of the castle walls remain, testaments to its once formidable structure. Architect Pēteris Blūms suggests the castle featured a unique shield wall design. Visitors can explore the ruins, ascend the hill via a staircase, and discover informative stands detailing the castle's history. The panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking, encompassing Razna Lake and the smaller Ubogova Lake. A memorial plaque at the foot of the hill commemorates the 1938 visit of Latvia's first president, Kārlis Ulmanis. According to local legend, after the death of the castle lord and his wife, their vast estate was divided among their three daughters – Roze, Lūcija, and Marija – who went on to build the castles of Rēzekne, Ludza and Viļaka.
