Discover more about Ziemeļu forts

Ziemeļu Forts, also known as the Northern Forts or Northern Fort, is a compelling historical site located on the Baltic Sea coast near Liepāja, Latvia. These fortifications are remnants of the Liepāja Fortress, constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to protect the city's naval base from potential enemy attacks. Originally named Fortification Battery No. 1, the site is the most well-known and visually impressive part of the Liepāja Fortress. Construction of the Liepāja Fortress began in 1893 and continued until 1906. However, just a few years after its completion, in November 1908, the fortress was deemed a strategic error and dismantled. Cannons were removed, some taken to Kaunas Fortress in Lithuania, and others melted down. The fortifications were intentionally destroyed through a series of explosions, leaving behind the partially ruined structures visible today. Today, Ziemeļu Forts is open to the public, offering a unique glimpse into military history. Visitors can explore the partially exploded artillery batteries, underground structures, and powder warehouses. Please note that the Baltic Sea's coast is eroding, making it dangerous to walk under the fort ruins. Despite the destruction, large-format murals adorn the fortification walls, adding an artistic element to the historical site. For visitor convenience, a picnic spot is available.
