Public Transport

To reach Ēdole Castle via public transport, begin at the Kuldīga bus station. Take a bus towards Liepāja; buses depart several times daily. From there, walk east on Pils iela for approximately 10 minutes until you arrive at Ēdole Castle, located at Pils iela 1. A one-way bus ticket will typically cost between €1–€2.

Ēdole Castle, or Ēdoles pils in Latvian, is a striking Gothic Revival castle located in the Ēdole parish of the Kuldīga Municipality, on the shores of Lake Ēdole. This architectural and archaeological monument of national significance dates back to the 13th century, offering visitors a tangible connection to Latvia's medieval past. Originally constructed between 1264 and 1267 for the Bishop of Piltene, the castle has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. It was rebuilt in the 16th century and remained in the possession of the Baltic-German Baron von Behr and his descendants from 1561 to 1920. The castle was expanded in the 18th century and underwent significant reconstruction between 1835 and 1841, becoming an early example of Neo-Gothic architecture in the Kurzeme region. A fire in 1905 during the Russian Revolution caused partial damage, leading to further remodeling that preserved its Gothic features. Today, visitors can explore the castle's museum, featuring exhibits in the white, red, and green halls, the library, and the tower's round room. The castle also houses a children's toy room and displays of sculptures, antique clocks, and handicrafts. From the castle tower, enjoy panoramic views of Temple Hill, the mill pond, the Vanka River valley, and the surrounding park. Ēdole Castle is also known for hosting concerts, exhibitions, and other events, and its image is immortalized in the Latvian film "Emīla nedarbi".
