Discover more about Pape National Park

Pape National Park, established in 2004, is a remarkable protected area in southwestern Latvia, known for its diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes. Spanning over 10,853 hectares in the Nīca and Rucava regions, the park encompasses the Baltic Sea coast with its dunes, Lake Pape, the Nida high bog, and natural floodplain meadows. This unique combination creates a haven for a wide array of plant, animal, and bird species. Visitors can explore the park's natural trails, including the Natural Process Path and the Orchid Trail, each offering a unique perspective on the park's diverse environment. Birdwatchers will find themselves in paradise, especially during the spring and autumn migrations when thousands of birds stop over in the area. The park is an internationally significant site for breeding, migrating, and wintering birds and is included in the list of Important Bird Areas in Europe. Pape is also one of the few places in Northern Europe where wild horses roam freely. Konik horses, closely related to the extinct European wild horse, were introduced in 1999 to help maintain the natural landscape. They graze alongside auroxen, contributing to the biodiversity of the territory. The park also includes the villages of Pape and Koņu, where visitors can experience the region's rich cultural and historical heritage.
