Discover more about The Freedom Monument

Located on Freedom Boulevard in Riga, near the Old Town, the Freedom Monument is more than just a monument; it's a testament to Latvia's enduring spirit of freedom. Unveiled in 1935, it commemorates the soldiers who perished during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). The monument stands on the site where a statue of the Russian ruler Peter the Great once stood. The 42.7-meter-tall structure is made of granite, travertine, and copper and was financed entirely by public donations. The monument features 56 sculptures arranged in thirteen groups across four levels, depicting Latvian history and culture. The base level symbolizes the nation's work ethic, spiritual strength, and striving for independence. The middle block represents the nation's ideals and striving for freedom. Topping the obelisk is a copper statue of Liberty, affectionately known as Milda, holding three golden stars representing Latvia's historical regions: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale. The inscription at the base reads, "For Fatherland and Freedom". Remarkably, the monument survived the Soviet occupation, becoming a symbol of national independence. Even though gatherings were forbidden, people still gathered to lay flowers. The monument has undergone several restorations, with the most recent completed in 2017. Today, a two-man honor guard stands at the base of the monument, symbolizing Latvia's sovereignty.
