Discover more about Aleksandra Vārti / Aleksandra Triumfa Arka

Aleksandra Vārti, also known as the Alexander Triumphal Arch, is a notable historical landmark located in Viestura Garden in Riga, Latvia. This neoclassical architectural monument was erected between 1815 and 1817, modeled after Roman triumphal arches, to celebrate the Russian Empire's victory in the Napoleonic Wars and to honor Emperor Alexander I. It stands as the only triumphal arch in Latvia, bearing the name of the Russian Emperor Alexander I Romanov. The arch's foundation was laid on July 4, 1815, with financial support from Riga's affluent citizens. The construction was led by Johann Daniel Gottfried, though the original architect remains unknown. Initially, the Alexander Gate was situated on what is now Brīvības iela (Freedom Street), near the Air Bridge. Emperor Alexander I inaugurated it on August 28, 1818, following the end of the Seventh Coalition War. As the city expanded, the arch was relocated in 1904 to the section of Brīvības gatve (Freedom Avenue) near Šmerlis. Following the death of Colonel Zemitāns, it was renamed Zemitāna vārti (Zemitāns Gate) in 1928. In 1936, it was moved to its present location in Viestura Garden. Today, the arch serves as a reminder of Riga's rich history and imperial past, inviting visitors to appreciate its architectural details and historical significance.
