Discover more about Bastejkalna Park

Bastejkalna Park, or Bastion Hill Park, is a spacious green area located on the eastern edge of Riga's Old Town. This park provides a serene escape from the bustling city streets, inviting visitors to unwind and immerse themselves in nature. Originally, the area was part of Riga's fortification system, with the Bastion Hill serving as a strategic defensive point. In 1856, the ramparts of the Riga Fortress were demolished, and the area was transformed into a park. The reconstruction of the greenery was led by Georg Kuphaldt, the Director of the Riga Gardens, from 1859 to 1887. Today, Bastejkalna Park features winding paths, flower beds, and benches, perfect for leisurely strolls and relaxation. A canal meanders through the park, adding to its charm, with several bridges crossing the water. One of the bridges is known for the padlocks left by couples as a symbol of their love. Visitors can also rent a boat for a ride on the canal. The park also includes monuments and sculptures, such as the Freedom Monument located at the park's edge, and memorial stones for the victims who died in January 1991. Other monuments include the Blaumanis Monument, the Peace Dance sculpture, the Armitstead Monument, and the Vīgners Monument. A waterfall cascade, built in 1898, adds to the park's beauty.
