Discover more about Esplanāde

Esplanāde, an 8.75-hectare park in the heart of Riga, is bordered by Kalpaka Boulevard, Elizabetes, Krisjana Valdemara, and Brivibas streets. This green oasis has a rich history, initially serving as an unruly hill known as Senais or Kubes kalns. In 1784, it was leveled by military decree and transformed into a parade ground for the local garrison. In 1901, the area was converted into a park after locals grew accustomed to its pavilions during Riga's 700th-anniversary celebrations. The park's layout began taking shape in the early 20th century, designed by city gardener Georg Kuphaldt. Esplanāde quickly became an important public space, hosting agricultural exhibitions and Latvian Song Festivals. Today, Esplanāde is a vibrant cultural hub featuring monuments to writer Rainis and Latvian army commander Oskars Kalpaks. The park also includes the Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, the Latvian National Museum of Art, and the Latvian Academy of Art. Visitors can enjoy seasonal flower displays, a playground, and various events, including Poetry Days and Christmas markets.
