In 1784, it was leveled by military decree and transformed into a parade ground for the local garrison. In 1901, the area was converted into a park after locals grew accustomed to its pavilions during Riga's 700th-anniversary celebrations. The park's layout began taking shape in the early 20th century, designed by city gardener Georg Kuphaldt. Esplanāde quickly became an important public space, hosting agricultural exhibitions and Latvian Song Festivals.Today, Esplanāde is a vibrant cultural hub featuring monuments to writer Rainis and Latvian army commander Oskars Kalpaks.
