One of the most dramatic events occurred during the Livonian War in 1577 when, under siege by Ivan the Terrible's army, about 300 people within the castle committed mass suicide by detonating the gunpowder stores. Though damaged, the castle remained in use until the end of the 17th century before being abandoned.The Romantic movement of the 19th century sparked renewed interest in the castle, leading to its conservation and study.
