Ēdole Castle, or Ēdoles pils, is a captivating architectural and archaeological monument of national importance located in the Ēdole Parish of Kuldīga Municipality, in the Courland region of Latvia. Situated on the banks of Ēdole Lake, this Gothic Revival castle dates back to 1264-1267 when it was constructed for the Bishop of Piltene.Originally, the castle consisted of two residential buildings connected by a stone wall and surrounded by a landscape park. Over the centuries, it has undergone several transformations, including a rebuilding in the 16th century and expansion in the 18th century. From 1561 to 1920, it was owned by the Baltic-German Baron von Behr and his descendants. A major reconstruction from 1835 to 1841 made it one of the first examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the Kurzeme region. The castle was partially burned during the Russian Revolution of 1905, but was remodeled between 1906 and 1907, preserving its Gothic forms.Today, visitors can explore the Medieval Castle Museum, featuring exhibits in the white, red, and green halls, the library, and the tower's round room. The Fairy Tale Kingdom, with 20 exhibitions dedicated to Latvian folk tales, is also located within the castle. From the castle tower, you can enjoy views of Temple Hill, the mill pond, the Vanka River valley, and the manor farm complex. Ēdole Castle is also a venue for concerts, exhibitions, and events, and its castle and courtyard were featured in the Latvian film "Emīla nedarbi".
