Krustpils Castle: A Medieval Fortress in Jēkabpils

Krustpils Castle, a prominent landmark in Jēkabpils, Latvia, boasts a rich and complex history spanning nearly eight centuries. Constructed in 1237 by the Archbishop of Riga, Nicholas of Magdeburg, the castle initially served as a crucial fortification along the Daugava River, guarding the route between Riga and Daugavpils. Over the centuries, Krustpils Castle has changed hands multiple times, reflecting the shifting political landscape of the region. In 1359, it was seized by the Livonian Order, becoming a point of contention between the Order and the Archbishopric. The castle later became the property of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th century. King Stephen Báthory granted the estate to Baron Nikolai von Korff in 1585, whose family owned it for the next 300 years.Throughout its history, Krustpils Castle has undergone numerous transformations. Originally a medieval fortress, it gradually evolved into a noble residence, with Baroque elements added in the 18th century. In the 20th century, the castle served military purposes, housing the Latgale Artillery Regiment after World War I and later being used by the Soviet Army. For nearly 50 years, the premises were left unmanaged, leading to significant deterioration.Since 1996, the Jēkabpils History Museum has been located in Krustpils Castle, undertaking extensive restoration and preservation efforts. Today, visitors can explore the castle's historic interiors, view exhibits on local history, and enjoy panoramic views from the tower. The museum offers guided tours in multiple languages and hosts various cultural events throughout the year.
