Discover more about Mangaļsala

Mangaļsala is a captivating destination where the echoes of history blend seamlessly with the tranquility of the sea. Situated on the right bank of the Daugava River as it flows into the Gulf of Riga, this district of Northern Riga boasts a rich tapestry of military heritage and natural landscapes. Originally an island formed by the shifting Daugava River, Mangaļsala's strategic location led to the construction of coastal fortifications starting in 1765. Over the centuries, the Russian Empire, Latvian, German, and Soviet armies expanded these defenses, leaving behind a network of bunkers, artillery batteries, and ammunition storage facilities. Today, visitors can explore these remnants, offering a glimpse into Latvia's complex military past. The area also offers natural attractions, including the Piejūra Nature Park, with trails winding through coastal forests and dunes. These paths lead to the sea, where you can find open-air fitness equipment and the Mangaļsala Pier. The pier, also known as the Eastern Pier, stretches 2240 meters into the sea and was constructed in the mid-19th century under the supervision of the Russian Emperor. At the end of the pier stands a lighthouse, its light visible for nautical miles. Adding to the area's allure is the shipwreck of the 'Lady Cotlin,' a concrete ship that ran aground in 1951 and has become a part of the seascape. Mangaļsala offers a unique experience, combining historical exploration with the serenity of the Baltic Sea.
