Turaida Castle, meaning 'Thor's garden' in Livonian, is a beautifully restored medieval castle located in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, across the Gauja River from Sigulda. Constructed in 1214 by Albert, the Archbishop of Riga, the castle stands on the site of a former wooden Livonian stronghold. Originally named Fredeland ('Land of Peace'), it soon adopted the Livonian name Turaida.Throughout the Middle Ages, Turaida Castle served as an important economic center, a local administrator's residence, and a military stronghold for the Archbishops of Riga. The castle's defensive systems were continuously improved, with the addition of a southern tower in the 14th century and a western tower in the early 15th century following the invention of firearms. Domestic buildings and living quarters were also added within the inner yard.Despite minor reconstruction in the 17th century, the castle gradually lost its strategic importance and was abandoned after a devastating fire in 1776. By the 20th century, only fragments of the defensive walls and towers remained. However, extensive archaeological excavations and restoration efforts in the second half of the 20th century have breathed new life into the castle.Today, Turaida Castle is part of the Turaida Museum Reserve and stands as one of Latvia's most impressive cultural landmarks. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved structures, including the main tower, which offers panoramic views of the Gauja River valley. The castle museum delves into the history of the castle, the Archbishopric of Riga, and events in the Turaida region connected to Latvian and European history. The Turaida Museum Reserve also encompasses the surrounding area, featuring small galleries, exhibits, an art studio, and a sculpture garden. Visitors can also explore the Turaida Church, built in 1750, and the Rose of Turaida Memorial, dedicated to a tragic local legend.
