Discover more about Turaida Castle

Turaida Castle, located within the Turaida Museum Reserve near Sigulda, Latvia, is a striking testament to the region's medieval past. Built in 1214 by Bishop Albert of Riga, it replaced a former wooden stronghold of the Livonian chief Kaupo. The castle's name, Turaida, means 'God's Garden' in the ancient Livonian language. Initially named Fredeland (Land of Peace), the name Turaida persisted. Throughout the Middle Ages, Turaida Castle served as an important economic center, a local administrator's residence, and a military stronghold for the Archbishops of Riga. Over the centuries, the castle witnessed numerous conflicts and changed ownership between Polish and Swedish forces. A devastating fire in 1776 left the castle uninhabitable, and it gradually fell into ruin. Extensive archaeological excavations and restoration efforts began in the mid-20th century, breathing new life into the castle. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved castle grounds, climb the 42-meter Donjon Tower for breathtaking views of the Gauja River valley, and visit the museum within the castle to learn about the history of the region, the Livonian Crusade, and medieval life. The Turaida Museum Reserve encompasses the castle and its surrounding area, featuring various historical buildings, galleries, and exhibits. Highlights include the Turaida Church, built in 1750, and the Rose of Turaida Memorial, dedicated to the tragic legend of Maija Roze, a young woman who lived in the castle. The Folk Song Garden showcases sculptures inspired by Latvian folk songs, adding a cultural dimension to the experience. The museum reserve covers 43.63 hectares.
