Discover more about Velnalas klintis un Velna ala

Velnalas Klintis and Velna Ala, located on the right bank of the Gauja River, are a captivating geological and historical site. The cliffs stretch for 250 meters, reaching a height of 15 meters, with the cave situated 8 meters above the water level. These sandstone cliffs began forming approximately 10,000 years ago during the Devonian period, shaped by the Gauja River's erosion and an underground spring. The Devil's Cave itself is relatively small, with a depth of about 35 meters. Its ceiling features six openings known as the "Devil's chimneys," adding to the cave's mystique. Legend has it that the Devil sought refuge in the cave after being startled by a rooster's crow. Another tale suggests that Jakubovskis, the murderer from the Turaida Rose legend, hid in the cave. Since the 19th century, Velna Ala has been a popular tourist destination. Although access to the cave is now restricted due to safety concerns, the cliffs and surrounding area remain a draw for nature enthusiasts and those interested in local legends. The area is also significant for its Devonian fish fossils.
