Discover more about Gārsenes muižas pils

Nestled in the scenic Selonia region of Latvia, Gārsene Manor stands as a testament to Neo-Gothic architecture and the legacy of the Baltic-German von Budberg family. Constructed in the mid-19th century, the manor boasts a captivating history and architectural design. The manor's construction began around 1856 for the von Budberg family, with the two-story portion completed first, followed by a single-story wing in 1885. Legend has it that the architect remains unknown, but the design is rumored to be inspired by a villa in Germany, the von Budberg family's homeland. The family owned the manor until the Latvian agrarian reforms in the 1920s. In 1939, the building was renovated for use as the Gārsene Elementary School, which it housed until 2015. The architectural complex includes a landscape park with ponds and decorative bridges. The manor also features an old barn and stables with an arcade porch, a brewery, and residences for laborers and servants. Inside, a historic tile stove with Delft-blue drawings remains as a unique monument. The manor houses a museum dedicated to the von Budberg family. Visitors can explore the manor individually, in groups, or with a guided tour. During the summer, the veranda serves as an exhibition space, and hostel-type rooms are available for overnight stays. Some say that the ghost of the castle, the Blue Lady, can be felt during the darkest hour of the night.
