Piemineklis latviešu sarkanajiem strēlniekiem: A Monument to Latvian Riflemen

The Piemineklis latviešu sarkanajiem strēlniekiem, located in Daugavpils, is a significant historical landmark dedicated to the Latvian Riflemen. Originally, the monument honored the Latvian Red Riflemen who fought for the Bolsheviks during the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War. In 2000, it was rededicated to all Latvian Riflemen, including those who fought in World War I and the Latvian War of Independence. The monument features three figures,depicting a commissioner, a young urban worker, and an older farmer. They are clad in greatcoats and sport five-pointed stars on their uniform caps. The 13-meter-high monument was created by sculptor Valdis Albergs, with architects Dzintars Driba and Gunārs Lūsis-Grīnbergs. The monument was opened in 1971. In 1972, Dz. Griba and Gunārs Lūsis-Grīnbergs received the USSR State Prize for the architecture of the museum building (then the Latvian Red Riflemen Museum) and the monument. In 2000, the inscription plaque was replaced with one that reads "Latvian Riflemen 1915-1920". The surrounding area is landscaped, offering a space for reflection.
