Discover more about Beirut Nymphaeum

The Beirut Nymphaeum offers a captivating glimpse into Beirut's Roman past. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, this well-preserved structure served as a monumental public fountain, sanctuary, and possibly even an assembly chamber. The Nymphaeum provided water and was a central gathering place for the inhabitants of Roman Berytus. The semi-circular design features a frieze adorned with intricate ornaments. A staircase, likely flanked by granite columns, leads to the main structure. While the inscription that once testified to its reconstruction in the 6th century AD is now lost, the Nymphaeum remains an impressive example of Roman architecture and engineering. Relocated to its current site in the Karantina area, the Nymphaeum bears witness to Beirut's tumultuous history, with bullet marks and bomb shell fragments from the Lebanese Civil War visible on its walls. Despite the passage of time and the marks of conflict, the Beirut Nymphaeum continues to connect visitors to the heart of Lebanon's heritage.
