Anjar Citadel: A Window into the Umayyad Dynasty

Nestled in the Bekaa Valley, approximately 60 kilometers from Beirut, Anjar Citadel stands as a testament to Lebanon's rich and diverse history. Founded in the early 8th century by Caliph Walid I of the Umayyad dynasty, Anjar (originally known as Ayn Al-Jaar, meaning "water from the rock") briefly flourished as a vital commercial center at the crossroads of two major trade routes: Beirut to Damascus and Homs to Tiberias.Anjar's strategic location and well-organized urban layout reflect the sophistication of Umayyad town planning. The city is enclosed by fortified walls, punctuated by forty towers, revealing a rectangular area of approximately 385 x 350 meters. Excavations in the late 1940s unearthed the ruins of a grand palace, a mosque, public baths, and colonnaded streets, showcasing a blend of Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic architectural influences.Despite its initial promise, Anjar's prosperity was short-lived. In 744 AD, after the defeat of Caliph Ibrahim, the city was partially destroyed and abandoned. This brief existence, however, makes Anjar a uniquely valuable historical site, as its ruins offer a snapshot of Umayyad architecture and urbanism from a specific period. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient city, imagining life during the Umayyad Caliphate and appreciating the cultural exchange that once thrived here. Anjar was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
