Saint John Marc Church, nestled in the heart of Byblos (Jbeil), is a captivating landmark that reflects the city's layered history and spiritual depth. Originally built in 1115 AD by the Crusaders, it was initially dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Some accounts suggest it may have been erected on the ruins of a pagan temple. The church is believed to be named after Saint John-Marc who established the first Christian community in Byblos. Over the centuries, the church has faced numerous challenges, including earthquakes and invasions, leading to periods of disuse and damage. In 1764, Emir Youssef Chehab of the Druze dynasty donated the church to the Lebanese Maronite Order, who restored and rededicated it to Saint John Mark in 1776. Further damage occurred during British bombardments in 1840, but the church was subsequently restored. The bell tower was constructed in 1947. Today, Saint John Marc Church stands as a symbol of Byblos's rich religious heritage and architectural prowess. Its Romanesque design, medieval crib vaulted structure, and peaceful ambiance make it a must-see for tourists exploring the ancient city. One notable feature is the open-air, domed baptistery on the northern side, dating back to the original 12th-century construction. The church is located on Rue de Port, conveniently situated between the port and the archaeological area.
