Discover more about Banias (Panias) Fall

The Banias Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction located in the Hermon Stream (Banias) Nature Reserve in the Golan Heights. It is the largest waterfall in Israel, cascading down 10 meters (33 feet) into a beautiful pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The reserve is not only a site of natural beauty but also rich in history, with ruins from ancient civilizations scattered throughout. The name 'Banias' originates from 'Panias,' which was derived from the Greek god Pan, a deity associated with forests and shepherds. The area was once home to a temple built by King Herod in honor of Pan, and later, Herod's son Philip established the city of Caesarea Philippi here. The site also holds significance in Christian history, as it is believed to be where Jesus gave the keys to heaven to Peter. The Banias Nature Reserve is divided into two main sections: the Springs and the Waterfall. The Waterfall area offers an easy, circular walk, including a unique suspended walkway that provides breathtaking views of the Hermon Stream as it flows through a narrow gorge. The Springs area features the source of the Hermon Stream, as well as several short walks to historical sites, including the remains of a Crusader fortress and the palace of Agrippa II. Visitors can explore various trails that combine nature and history, with options for both short and longer hikes. The "Hanging Bridge" trail is a highlight, offering an immersive experience close to the rushing waters. The reserve is open year-round, with the waterfall being most impressive during the winter and spring when the water flow is at its peak.
