Discover more about Saint George Maronite Cathedral

Saint George Maronite Cathedral, a prominent religious and historical landmark in Beirut, stands as a testament to the city's vibrant cultural and religious heritage. The cathedral serves as the principal church for the Maronite Catholic Archeparchy of Beirut. Its story is one of construction, destruction, and restoration, mirroring the tumultuous history of Lebanon itself. Originally built between 1884 and 1894, the cathedral was designed by Italian architect Giuseppe Maggiore, drawing inspiration from the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. This influence is evident in the neoclassical facade, the interior layout featuring a nave and two lateral aisles separated by rows of columns. The cathedral was constructed on the site of an older church dating back to 1755, which had become too small for the growing Maronite population of Beirut. Roman columns from the temple of Deir El Qalaa in Beit Mery were incorporated into the structure. Throughout its history, Saint George Maronite Cathedral has endured significant challenges. It was heavily damaged during the Lebanese Civil War, suffering plunder and defacement. However, in 1997, a thorough restoration began, culminating in its re-inauguration on April 24, 2000, by Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir. The restoration also uncovered significant archaeological remains, including Hellenistic and Roman remnants, which have been preserved. In 2016, a new campanile was inaugurated, its height matching the minarets of the neighboring Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque. The cathedral suffered damage during the Beirut explosions in 2020 and has since been undergoing repairs. Today, the Saint George Maronite Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Maronite faith and cultural identity in Beirut. Visitors can admire its architecture, explore its history, and experience the serene atmosphere within its walls.
