Getting There

    The Old City of Safed is best explored on foot. From the Safed Academic College, head west along Yerushalayim Street, then turn right onto Alkabetz Street to enter the heart of the Old City. The main synagogues and art galleries are within easy walking distance of each other. Be prepared for some uphill walking, as the city is built on a hillside. No costs are associated with walking.

    Buses connect Safed with major cities in Israel. From the central bus station, located outside the Old City, you can take local buses or taxis to reach your destination. Bus line 1, 2, or 3 will take you closer to the Old City. A single bus fare within the city costs approximately 6 NIS.

    Taxis are readily available in Safed. You can find them at the central bus station or hail them on the street. A short taxi ride from the bus station to the Old City will cost approximately 25-35 NIS. Be sure to negotiate the fare or ensure the meter is running.
