    Discover more about Izzedin Hammam

Izzedin Hammam, nestled in the heart of Tripoli, stands as a remarkable testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. Constructed during the governorship of Izz al-Din Aybak al-Mawsili in the late 13th century (1294-1298), it is the first hammam built in Mamluk Tripoli and remained the largest and most important in the city. Emir Izzedin Aibek, proud of his contribution, chose to be buried in a mausoleum attached to the hammam. Bathhouses, known as hammams, held a significant place in the lives of people in the Muslim world for centuries, serving as places for cleansing, relaxation, and social interaction. Izzedin Hammam follows the classic pattern of apodyterium, tepidarium, and caldarium, known in Arabic as the burrani (dressing room), al-wustani (warm water room), and al-hammi (hot water room). The building's design reflects the influence of Roman-Byzantine bath traditions, adapted and incorporated into Islamic architecture. Visitors to Izzedin Hammam can explore its various chambers, each designed for different purposes. The entrance leads to a large square room (mashlah) with iwans, an octagonal pool, and a dome with a skylight. The hammam also features a corridor with Christian iconography, remnants of a Crusader church or hospice that once stood on the site. The front portal is decorated with an inscribed fragment between two Saint-James shells, and the inner door is surmounted by the Paschal lamb. The hammam has been in continuous use for centuries, although it is currently undergoing restoration.
