Discover more about dinosaur footprints

The Subeng River Dinosaur Footprints site offers a unique glimpse into Lesotho's prehistoric past. Located in a small stream, the site contains fossilized footprints embedded in a sandstone slab, marking it as one of the country's most significant paleontological locations. Discovered in 1955, the Subeng River site displays the footprints of at least three, and possibly as many as six, different species of dinosaur. Some prints show five toes, while others display three. Careful observation also reveals fossilized worm trails and mud cracks on other slabs in the riverbed, adding to the site's intrigue. Lesotho is rich in dinosaur history, with several footprint sites open to the public. The dinosaur, Lesothosaurus, was named after the country. This site provides a tangible connection to the creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago. The Subeng River rises quickly during the rainy summer months, potentially obscuring some of the prints. Therefore, the dry winter months are the best time to visit.
