It's 26.5 km (16.46 miles) long, running west-east from Thabaneng to Phafoli. The pass is named after the beautiful views at the summit. It's said to be one of the best views while driving through the real Africa. It is worth stopping to take pictures when you are at the top of the pass. The pass dates back to 1905 when it was established as a trading post. Mervyn Bosworth Smith, who was educated at Oxford, fell in love with the area and decided to open a trading station there. He built the store and sheds, then started on the house, which was built of cut stone and under thatch. He also built a swimming pool and a tennis court. Smith had to make the road from the “Gates of Paradise” to Malealea, to get building supplies to Malealea. In his latter years he used to set off with labourers, spades, picks and wheelbarrows to repair the road.
