Mats'a-Mararo (Three Cascades): Lesotho's Natural Symphony

Getting There

• Car

  From the town of Mokhotlong, drive south on the A2 road towards Butha-Buthe. After approximately 30 km, turn right onto a dirt road leading towards the Three Cascades. Follow this road for about 10 km, watching for signs pointing towards Mats'a-Mararo. The road can be rough and may require a 4x4 vehicle, so drive cautiously. There is no official parking fee at the designated parking area.

• Public Transport

  Take a taxi or shuttle from Mokhotlong to Butha-Buthe. Taxis can be found at the main taxi rank and usually leave when full. The ride will take about 1-2 hours depending on road conditions. Once in Butha-Buthe, arrange for a local taxi or a 4x4 vehicle to take you to Mats'a-Mararo, as public transport to the cascades is limited. Expect to pay around 150-200 Maloti for the ride. Negotiate the fare in advance. Taxi fares have increased recently. Local, 4+1 taxis cost around M13.00, and minibuses cost around M12.00.

• Hiking

  If you are already near the Three Cascades, you can hike from nearby accommodations or campsites. Access the trailhead through local guides who can provide direction and ensure safety. Wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry enough water. The hike typically takes about 2-3 hours depending on your starting point and pace.
